Background Information:
By 2050, the planet could be using twice as much electricity compared to today. Are you interested in joining an organisation where your work will contribute and help to shape the future of the world’s energy? If so, an apprenticeship within the UKAEA Apprenticeship Scheme provides a perfect gateway into a future career in this industry. Fusion, the process that powers the Sun and Stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs. UKAEA are at the forefront of realising energy from fusion, working with industry and research partners to deliver the ground-breaking developments that will underpin tomorrow’s fusion power stations with the aim of bringing fusion electricity to the grid. As we work towards our mission and goals, UKAEA has devised values that capture the spirit of how we work. These values include being: Innovative, Committed, Trusted and Collaborative.
Role Description:
Who are we looking for?  We have an excellent opportunity for motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our organisation where you will spend 80% of your time developing both your general work-related skills and 20% on obtaining professional qualifications. Full training will be provided throughout your apprenticeship, and UKAEA has a dedicated Early Careers Team to support your journey and a nurturing community that learns from each other. Within the 20% training and development, you will be required to enroll with a training provider to complete a suite of activities designed to develop your professional qualifications. This may be completed on day release or block release dependent on the apprenticeship standard you are completing. With a natural interest in all things engineering, your curious and probing mind will steer you through your development. Having a great attitude to personal development, your enthusiasm will drive your learning in this exciting environment. This together with your excellent communication skills, reliability and yearning to succeed will bring you success. What opportunities does the Engineering Technician Apprenticeship vacancy cover?   In your first year, you will experience the world class Oxfordshire Advanced Skills Training Facility (OAS), where you will learn all aspects of Performing Engineering Operations in skills such as:
  • Machining
  • Hand fitting
  • Pneumatics
  • Hydraulics
  • Electrical principles
  • CAD
  • Robotics and many other aspects within the Engineering scope
In years 2 and 3, you will experience rotation around UKAEA by working directly with our many experts and be involved in departmental projects. These projects and other varied experience opportunities will start to build your confidence and natural ability within the field of Engineering. During this time, you will be able to identify your preference of Mechanical or Electrical Bias in the many disciplines that are available. Part way though year 3 and for year 4, you will be working in your chosen final placement area building relationships with your colleagues and helping our organisation to further its progress towards our goals. As the above is occurring, you will also be provided with the classroom-based input on day release (at UKAEA) to help you to achieve your academic qualification towards level 3 certification. For those who excel at distinction level, an opportunity can be discussed to then take up HNC at level 4. Our apprenticeship scheme also gives you the unique opportunity of ‘Learning whilst Earning’ If an apprenticeship in a different subject area interests you, please view our full list of vacancies, as we are offering multiple apprenticeships across several disciplines. Please note – Our apprenticeship scheme is open to applicants who have the right to work in the UK.
